Environment

SEE our actions involving environmental stewardship

Balancing the needs of our environment and customers is important to Ameren. We have created a range of programs to protect the environment, preserve wildlife and educate future generations. These include:

  • Conservation areas: Ameren has long partnered with Missouri officials to preserve land around our generating facilities. For example, the Reform Conservation Area consists of about 6,300 acres surrounding Callaway Energy Center near Fulton, Mo.
  • Shoreline management: Ameren Missouri oversees shoreline management at the Lake of the Ozarks under provisions of our operating license for Bagnell Dam and the Osage Energy Center. In 2015, nearly 515 volunteers worked to clean more than 580 miles of shore and remove 565 cubic yards of trash and more than 29 tons of debris during our Adopt-the-Shoreline Cleanup.
  • Planting trees: Each year, Ameren Illinois partners with local communities to replace trees that were damaged or uprooted during major storms. Ameren Illinois provides financial grants to purchase new trees, and employees work with local volunteers to re-plant them in the community.
  • Managing vegetation: We manage vegetation on rights-of-way along power lines for safety and to prevent, where possible, vegetation from causing service interruptions, especially during severe weather. Our vegetation program promotes both dependable service and sound arboriculture practices—promoting healthier forests and sustainable compatible vegetation while increasing reliability. As needed, we modify structures and/or install equipment that helps avian wildlife to co-exist with our facilities.
  • Water conservation: Water is essential to our daily lives. Ameren is committed to water conservation efforts throughout our service territory. Limiting water usage should be an everyday practice. In 2015, Ameren implemented water conservation projects that will save an estimated 7.8 million gallons of water annually as a result of investments we’ve made in new equipment and upgrades at facilities in Illinois and Missouri, including our St. Louis headquarters.

Helping Birds Thrive

Saving Raptors in Illinois

Ameren Illinois co-workers teamed with the Illinois Raptor Center at the annual Bald Eagle Watch at Starved Rock State Park, Utica, Ill. More than 3,000 people had the opportunity to learn how Ameren Illinois’ avian protection program is saving raptors across its service territory.

Spotting Falcons in Missouri

In partnership with the Missouri Department of Conservation and World Bird Sanctuary, Ameren Missouri in 2015 provided an online webcam at the Sioux Energy Center for a bird’s-eye view of peregrine falcons raising their chicks. See highlights from the cam.
